A Successful Instrument Workshop on HPLC and ICP-MS

Spreading Knowledge Through Hands-On Learning for Future Experts

On June 24, 2023, the CKDu Information and Research Center hosted an in-depth Instrument Workshop focused on High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) techniques. The workshop welcomed 100 eager participants under the guidance of experts from the center, headed by the acting director, Prof. W.A.P.J. Premaratne. Despite the absence of the center director, Prof. Janitha Liyanage, who was out of the country, her contributions to the workshop's success were invaluable. The event was a great success and provided a valuable learning experience for all attendees.

The workshop began promptly at 8:30 am, with registration taking place until 9:00 am. Participants received a file containing presentation slides as well as a pen to take notes during the enlightening lectures. The opening address was delivered by Prof. ‪W.A.P.J. Premaratne, who then continued to present an informative talk on the principles of ICP-MS. Following his presentation, Dr. Thelma Abeysinghe took to the stage to share her expertise on HPLC techniques.

After a brief tea break, participants engaged in practice rounds to enhance their understanding of the instruments and techniques discussed. The ICP-MS sessions were conducted by me (Rajith Perera), while Mr. Ruwan Perera supervised the HPLC rounds. Dr. Medha Gunaratna demonstrated microwave digestion and sample preparation for ICP-MS and HPLC analysis, while Dr. Chamila Kadigamuwa focused on manual injection methods in HPLC. Additionally, Dr. Kadigamuwa showcased other instruments such as Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GCMS), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), pH, and conductivity meters.

The practical sessions were divided into two main segments. The morning round encompassed an overview of instrument parts, user maintenance, and the theory behind ICP-MS and HPLC operations. Meanwhile, the afternoon segment allowed participants to learn how to operate the instruments, set up the parameters, run the samples, and interpret the results in real-time.

The workshop concluded with a rewarding certificate ceremony for all attendees, acknowledging their active participation and newfound knowledge. Thanks to the efforts of the CKDu Information and Research Center team, particularly Prof. Janitha Liyanage's behind-the-scenes contributions, as well as the valuable work of non-academic staff members such as Amila T . Kannangara, S A A K. Suriyaarchchi, Erandi Udyasisri, the Instrument Workshop at CKDu Information and Research Center proved a worthwhile experience for everyone involved.

The success of the Instrument Workshop at CKDu Information and Research Center was further strengthened by the support and assistance from the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS) Section E2 (Chemical Sciences). Their collaboration and dedication to promoting scientific knowledge played a significant role in making this event an enriching experience for all attendees.

In summary, the HPLC and ICP-MS Instrument Workshop at the CKDu Information and Research Center provided an invaluable opportunity for 100 participants to learn from industry experts. Engaging lectures and hands-on practical sessions facilitated a comprehensive understanding of these vital techniques, equipping attendees with the skills necessary to excel in their respective fields. The CKDu Information and Research Center continues to play a crucial role in promoting expertise through such informative workshops, shaping the future leaders in science and research.
