STEM Education Promotion Program at Sir Henry Olcott Adarsha Vidyalaya

The University of Kelaniya, in collaboration with the Chemical Society and the Society of Plant and Molecular Biology (MBBT), recently organized a STEM Education Promotion Program at Sir Henry Olcott Adarsha Vidyalaya in Galgamuwa. The aim of this program was to promote science education among young students and provide them with the necessary facilities to excel in their studies.

Objectives

The program's objectives were to promote science education among young students, facilitate the teaching and learning process by developing a laboratory and library, and provide sanitary facilities. The program aimed to provide educational facilities for rural schools and help young students overcome poverty to reach their educational goals, ensuring a brighter future and the opportunity to break the poverty cycle.

Activities

The program included a range of activities to achieve its objectives, including donating chemicals, glassware, three microscopes, and some models to the school science laboratory. Additionally, more than 250 books were donated to the school library to enhance the student’s knowledge and understanding of science.

Another key aspect of the program was constructing a sanitary facility for the school. This washroom complex was built to provide students with a clean and hygienic place to wash their hands and attend to their personal needs.

Finally, the program included a tree-planting project. Students from each grade were handed a tree and were responsible for taking care of it, even under drought conditions. This project was carried out with the support of Dr. Rangika Bandara, SDC, University of Kelaniya.

Conclusion

The STEM Education Promotion Program at Sir Henry Olcott Adarsha Vidyalaya was a great success and made a significant impact on the lives of young students. The program provided them with the necessary facilities to excel in their studies and pursue their dreams of becoming scientists. The support and assistance provided by the University of Kelaniya and its collaborating societies will go a long way in ensuring a brighter future for these young students.
